Distribution of Homestead Cultivation Climate Tolerant Vegetable Materials in Chakaria, Cox’s Bazar

Due to climate change sea level raising in the Bay of Bengal and Mathamuhuri river going to navigability salinity water increasing day by day in the coastal part of Chakaria Upazila. The salinity water of the sea has threatened the livelihood, agricultural production and water rights of the coastal people in the coastal part of Cox’s Bazar district. To solve the above problems, the non-governmental development organization ISDE Bangladesh has taken various initiatives to increase alternative the production of climate-tolerant agriculture in the coastal areas, especially vegetable cultivation in the homesteads, and to ensure alternative employment and livelihood for the coastal population. As part of that, a training program was organized for selected women and men along with distribution of fertilizers, seeds and agricultural materials to increase climate tolerant homestead vegetable cultivation in Chakaria coastal area of ​​Cox’s Bazar district.





15 December 2022 Chairman of B M Char Union Parishad SM Jahangir Alam was the chief guest at the distribution of agricultural materials among the selected beneficiaries in B M Char Union Parishad premises of ​​Chakaria Upazila. UP Secretary Erfanul Haque, Program Coordinator of ISDE Md Jahangir Alam, Upazila Manager M Jalal Uddin, Training Officer Abdullah Mohammad Fahim, Project Officer Sadia Nasreen and Shahidul Islam amongst others  were present in the event.

At the same time, Alhaj Nur Hossain Arif, Chairman of Badrkhali Union Parishad, was the chief guest at the distribution ceremony organized at the Badarkhali Union Parishad premises. UP Secretary Ajay Kumar Rudra, Program Coordinator of ISDE Md Jahangir Alam, Upazila Manager M Jalal Uddin, Training Officer Abdullah Mohammad Fahim, Project Officer Sadia Nasreen and Shahidul Islam among others were present in the event.

It is noted that under the Community Based Climate Resilience Initiative in Coastal Areas of Bangladesh project under the initiative of the non-governmental development organization ISDE Bangladesh in cooperation with the international development organization of the WJR United Kingdom, various efforts have been made to ensure alternative livelihoods by increasing the production of climate tolerant agriculture, fisheries and animal resources by overcoming the problems caused by climate change. As part of the programme, agricultural inputs, fertilizers and seeds were distributed among 200 selected beneficiaries in coastal areas.

The speakers in the event said that the fresh water crisis has increased due to the increase in salinity due to the filling of the river beds due to climate change in the coastal areas, as well as the use of saline water for agricultural production, livestock rearing, drinking water, cooking and other daily activities has threatened the livelihood of ordinary people. In addition, women face various health risks, especially convulsions, uterine problems, and the rate of violence against women is also increasing. ISDE thanked and thanked the Union Parishad for taking such a bold initiative to ensure the food security of the coastal population. Hope this activity will be strengthened in the future.
