The non-governmental voluntary organization ISDE Bangladesh and the youth consumer rights fighters of the country CAB Youth Group of Chittagong Metropolis have started humanitarian relief activities in the flood-affected areas of the country. From August 20, 2024, more than a hundred members of CAB Youth Group have participated in the rescue operations of flooded ban residents in Fatikchari, Hathajari and Mirsarai upazilas of Chittagong and have stood by the affected people. Recently, water coming down from upstream and very heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding in the eastern districts and hilly areas of the country. Due to the water level of the rivers exceeding the dangerous limit, there have been severe floods in the vast areas of 11 districts of the country. According to the government, 45 lakh people in 11 districts have lost their homes and various structures including roads, bridges and schools have been severely damaged.
On 25 August 2024, under the initiative of ISDE and CAB Youth Group of Chittagong Metropolis, cooked food, clean drinking water and old clothes were distributed among 500 flood-affected families in Mirsarai and Fatikchari upazilas of Chittagong. ISDE Executive Director and CAB Central Committee Vice President SM Nazer Hossain inaugurated the activities of the humanitarian team in the flood-affected areas on the eve of the journey. On this occasion, CAB Chandgaon thana President and District Social Entrepreneurs Parishad Joint Secretary Mohammad Jane Alam, CAB Chittagong Metropolitan Joint Secretary Mohammad Salim Jahangir, CAB Chandgaon Organizing Secretary Abdur Rahman, ISDE Program Coordinator Md Jahangir Alam, Project Officer Abu Hasan Azmi, CAB Youth Group Chittagong Metropolitan President Abu Hanif Noman, Vice President Niloy Burman, Members Russell Uddin, Sidratul Muntaha, Sajib, Eshraful, Ashfakur Rahman, Yashin Arfat, Naeem, Kaushik Biswas and others. Later, humanitarian team humanitarian team distributed cooked food, clean drinking water and old clothes among 500 families in Paschim Mithanala, Chagmadyarhat, Aburhat, Azampur area of Mirsarai upazila.
ISDE and CAB Youth Group are working to ensure the protection of young consumer rights activists, especially women, children and the elderly, as part of humanitarian relief operations. Building temporary shelters among flood-affected families rendered homeless, assisting villagers to safely shelter in shelters, providing clean water and sanitation. In addition, campaigning among traders to humanely treat villagers in crisis so that traders do not capitalize on floods and natural disasters to make exorbitant profits. ISDE Executive Director and CAB Central Committee Vice President S M Nazer Hossain said that all people should stand by the helpless people during floods or natural disasters. After the student uprising, the voice of building a humanitarian Bangladesh is echoing loudly across the country. There the young consumer rights fighters of ISDE and CAB Youth Group are not silent. They are taking initiative to stand by the affected and destitute people and are calling to extend a helping hand to people of all walks of life. At the same time, long-term initiatives have been taken to create awareness and increase capacity among the local population and youth at the grassroots level to prevent climate change-related and man-made natural disasters.
It is noted that the non-governmental voluntary organization ISDE in collaboration with national and international development organizations is conducting the activities of determining the damage and possible emergency primary needs in the flood-affected areas. Later, it took the initiative of conducting long-term relief and rehabilitation programs for the development of the affected population.
